As the winter season is upon us, the homelessness crisis in the UK is deepening. This issue was discussed in an Inside Housing article where they highlighted that there has been a 6.8% increase in households facing homelessness or at risk of it compared to the previous year. In this challenging time, private landlords have a unique opportunity to contribute to the solution by providing homes for social housing.
Recent government figures reveal a record-high of 104,510 households in temporary accommodation, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the housing crisis. While the government has implemented strategies and committed funds to tackle homelessness, the scale of the issue demands collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, including private landlords.
Private landlords possess a valuable asset in their property portfolios, and leveraging these assets can be a game-changer in the battle against homelessness. Property owners often have vacant properties within their portfolios. By identifying and allocating these vacant units for social housing, they are able to contribute to increasing the available housing stock for the homeless. This not only addresses the immediate crisis but also establishes a long-term solution to housing instability.
Our aim by partnering with The Social Housing Group is to provide more long-term housing into this sector.
