The Desperate Need for More Properties: Some children stranded up to 500 miles from home

8th June 2023

In an eye-opening report by the BBC in April, charity organization Become has drawn attention to the distressing reality faced by numerous children in the United Kingdom who find themselves stranded up to 500 miles away from their families.

This article not only exposes the plight of these children but also highlights the urgent need for appropriate properties in the right geographical areas.   The findings show, one in five children in care are being placed more than 20 miles from their local area.

It highlights the heart-wrenching challenges experienced by these young people who are separated from their families, friends, and familiar surroundings. The details provided by Become, make it clear that the current circumstances leave these children in a state of uncertainty, longing for a place they can truly call home.

The report reveals that the issue goes beyond distance alone; it is a matter of placing these children in the right areas that provide essential support and connections. Making more properties available across the UK will ensure access to suitable educational opportunities, familiar community networks, and the emotional stability derived from being in a strong community and close to family and friends.

The BBC article serves as a poignant reminder of the critical need for properties for children who find themselves stranded far from home.

We can make a real difference, by sourcing more properties for organisations who need more children’s homes.  We have several children’s home providers signed up to The Gateway looking for properties now, can you help?
