This carers week, we're thinking of all carers

13th June 2025

This week is Carers Week 2025, and whilst we spend our days working with professional care teams in the supported living sector, we wanted to take a moment to recognise all the other incredible carers who make such a difference in people's lives every single day.

We know that behind many of the individuals who eventually move into supported living accommodation, there are often family members, friends, and loved ones who have been providing care - sometimes for years. You've been the unsung heroes, juggling work, family life, and caring responsibilities, often with little recognition or support.

The theme for this year's Carers Week is "Caring About Equality," and the statistics really bring home just how much unpaid carers sacrifice:

  • 70% of carers have their own long-term health conditions
  • Carers face poverty rates 50% higher than non-carers
  • Young adult carers are 38% less likely to get a university degree
  • 1 in 4 working carers have had to take lower-paid jobs because of their caring role

These aren't just numbers - they represent millions of people who've put their own lives on hold to care for someone they love.

Through our work with care providers, we are aware of families who've reached a point where they need additional support. We know there are parents who've cared for adult children with learning disabilities for decades, partners supporting someone through mental health challenges, and young people caring for grandparents or siblings.

Sometimes the decision to explore supported living comes from exhaustion, sometimes from a desire to give their loved one more independence, and sometimes because life circumstances change. Whatever brings families to that point, we have nothing but respect for the journey they've been on.

Whether it's a family member providing daily care at home, a support worker in a care home, or a professional in supported living, we're all working towards the same thing - helping people live their best possible lives with dignity, choice, and support.

This Carers Week, we want to say thank you to:

  • Every parent who's advocated tirelessly for their child's needs
  • Every young person who's grown up caring for family members
  • Every partner or spouse who's adapted their life to support their loved one
  • Every sibling who's taken on caring responsibilities
  • Every friend or neighbour who steps in to help

At Supported Living Gateway, we're committed to supporting quality care in all its forms. We work with care providers who understand that maintaining family relationships and supporting unpaid carers is just as important as the professional care they provide.

When families do choose supported living, the best providers work alongside family carers, not instead of them. They recognise that you know your loved one best and that your ongoing involvement is valuable and welcomed.

This Carers Week, please know that your contribution matters enormously. Whether you're providing hands-on care every day, visiting regularly, or simply being there as emotional support, you're making a real difference.

We hope this week brings some recognition for everything you do, and we hope that society continues to move towards the equality that all carers deserve - the chance to care for your loved ones without having to sacrifice your own health, career prospects, or financial security.

To all the carers out there, Thank you for everything you do. You truly are extraordinary.
